Get Certified!
Take your scuba class with Scuba Frisco Sports!

Get your PADI Open Water Diver scuba certification. If you've always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see the wondrous world beneath the waves, this is where it starts.

What You Learn

The fun part about this course is ... well, just about all of it because learning to dive is incredible. You breathe underwater for the first time and learn what you need to know to become a certified diver. In the Open Water Diver course you'll enjoy three fun components:

Confined Water Training:

Orientation Night at Scuba Frisco Sports
First you'll meet your dive crew and some new friends, we'll make sure your paperwork is in order, answer lingering questions, and then get plenty of hands on time with the gear you'll be using.

In-water Training at The Colony Aquatic Park
Next you'll develop the skills you'll need to be a safe and comfortable scuba diver. We train in an indoor, heated, competition size pool. This means we can dive year round no matter what the weather is like outside. And since the pool is BIG and our classes are small, you'll never feel crowded.

  • Weekend Option
Starts with Thursday Orientation Night at Scuba Frisco Sports.
In-water Training at The Colony Aquatic Park on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Weeknight Option
Starts with Monday Orientation Night at Scuba Frisco Sports.
In-water Training at The Colony Aquatic Park on Tuesday, Friday, and the following Tuesday.

Knowledge Development with PADI eLearning:

You will not need to attend any classroom sessions during the course since this component is all online!

PADI's state of the art eLearning program develops your familiarity with basic scuba diving principles and procedures - at your own pace, in the comfort of your own home. You learn things like how pressure affects your body, how to choose the best gear and what to consider when planning dives.

Open Water Dives:

To complete your certification, apply your new knowledge, skills, and gear in a real open water environment.

  • Weekend at Clear Springs Scuba Park Option:
Most popular option. Join your instructor and new friends for a fun weekend of diving just a 70 minute drive from Frisco at a dedicated open water diving facility located in Terrell, Texas.

  • Referral Option:
Good option if you are on a time crunch or simply prefer to make your dives at your vacation destination. Complete your open water certification dives any where in the world you wish to go, at any of over 5,000 PADI dive centers and resorts.

The Scuba Gear You Use

Included in the Open Water Diver course, you will use our top-notch Aqua Lung and Scubapro diving equipment in the pool and at Clear Springs Scuba Park, including:

  • Regulator with Alternate Air Source - your air delivery system.

  • Dive Computer - to manage your dives.

  • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) - for surface flotation and underwater control.

  • Weight System and Weights - to help you submerge with a wetsuit.

  • Air Tank - your self contained air supply.

  • Wetsuit to use in the pool - to keep you warm for safety and comfort.

  • Well also provide you with a Diver Logbook to keep!

The Essential Equipment You Will Need

For fit, comfort and maximum fun you will need to have some of your own gear:

  • Swimsuit and Towel - because we don't dive naked and to dry off.

  • Scuba Mask - to comfortably see underwater.

  • Snorkel - for easy surface breathing.

  • Scuba Fins - to move easily and comfortably underwater.

  • Dive Booties - to protect and keep your feet warm.

  • Wetsuit for your open water dives (Available to rent at Clear Springs Scuba Park.)

You may buy your Mask, Snorkel, Fins, and Booties with our special new student offer, or you may rent a Mask, Snorkel and Fins for the duration of your course for $100. If you buy a Mask, Snorkel, Fins, and Booties from Scuba Frisco Sports before your open water dives, we will apply the entire rental fee toward your purchase.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum Age: 12 years old. (10 years old for Junior Open Water certification.)

  • Physical: For safety, all students complete a brief questionnaire that asks about medical conditions that could be a problem while diving. If you can answer YES to one or more of the medical history questions on the RSTC Medical Statement Form, then it is required that you obtain a physician's approval on the form before any in-water activities, including confined water training.

  • Water skills: Before completing the confined water dives, your instructor will have you demonstrate basic water skill and comfort with a watermanship assessment. This entails an untimed 200 yard swim or 300 yard swim with mask/snorkel/fins. You will also complete a 10 minute float/tread water.

  • Physical Challenges: Any individual who can meet the performance requirements of the course qualifies for certification. Divers who cannot meet the standard performance requirements due to a physical handicap are eligible for certification through HSA (the Handicapped Scuba Association). Our training crew includes HSA certified instructors and divemasters.

Can I schedule a class for my group?

Yes. Whether you have a scout troop, work group, or just a group of friends, we can arrange a custom Open Water Diver course for you. Minimum group size is 6 participants. Call us or stop by to make reservations for your group.

Do I really have to use those darned dive tables?

NO! We've come a long way in diving in the last 60 years. Beginning in 2010, student divers are no longer required to use dive tables during training. Lucky you! You will learn how to use a modern, reliable dive computer to plan and manage your dive and post-dive activities. You will use one of our Uwatec or Suunto dive computers during all in-water training, even in the pool.

You will learn how to use dive tables, or an electronic calculator like version, during your online training. It's good to know about dive tables in the very unlikely event your dive computer were to fail during a dive.

What about Diver Protection Insurance?

Included at no charge to you from the Divers Alert Network. This special insurance provides 100% coverage during your training in the unlikely event you sustain a decompression illness. (You will, of course, learn all of the ways to minimize this risk during the course.)

Where can I dive?

The short answer is: you can dive practically anywhere there’s water – from a swimming pool to the ocean and all points in between, including quarries, lakes, rivers and springs.

Does my certification expire?

Your Open Water Diver certification will never expire. However, if you go several months or longer without making a dive, we highly recommend a one night Scuba Review program to brush up those rusty scuba skills before your next big adventure. Or, you might consider adding some new skills in the process and opt for the Advanced Open Water Course.

What’s to fear?

Scuba diving gives you a unique way to face challenges and transform your life in new ways. Becoming a diver can give you confidence that spills over into the way you face life every day.

What's next?

Continue your adventure with the Advanced Open Water Diver program or a Specialty Course, your next step in exploring the underwater world. In the Open Water Diver course you learned how to dive, now it's time to learn what you can do while diving.
